I think one of the older manuals I have shows a special offset
open end wrench used for this. I believe it had an actual VW tool #.

I have meant to do this for years, but never really needed it that
much. Like you say, I have always managed to get along with a large
open end (27mm) stuck in there at an angle. It's a little cramped,
but it works.
