Extra defrost

I have a question that I have been meaning to ask:

On our 64 sunroof notch there is an extra heater tube that runs from the
pasenger side heat box under the rear seat, thru the center tunnel and then
up to the defrost/windsheild area in front of the driver. I have not found
this on any other car that we have owned or admired.  Could this extra
defrost be because of the sunroof? or mabey a cold climate option?
