Since the factory never installed radios, there really is no such
thing as a "correct" one. In the US, VWoA sold their dealers a
particular setup, but others were available. Blaupunkt sold several
radios and special installation kits specific to various models of
cars; I find these to be the most polished, but they are quite rare.
I have a 66 with a Sapphire ? in a cast/chromed (and really rather
ugly) metal housing. This may have been VWoA, but later VWoA units
were Sapphire ? in plastic housings. All were slung under the dash,
of course.
It would be interesting to see what was standard in different
countries.
