In the US, VWoA sold their dealers a particular setup, but others were available. Blaupunkt sold several radios and special installation kits specific to various models of cars; I find these to be the most polished, but they are quite rare. I have a 66 with a Sapphire ? in a cast/chromed (and really rather ugly) metal housing. This may have been VWoA, but later VWoA units were Sapphire ? in plastic housings. All were slung under the dash, of course. It would be interesting to see what was standard in different countries.
