Finding TDC (was: Timing and TDC)

Finding TDC...

The method i have used many times, and love, i learned from one of the
old school VW mechanics we have around here...they call him Foggy....:)

Now...what he told me was quite simple.

Have your helper (all though i admit to doing this alone more than one
time....a few mirrors, stretches, and interesting cheaters...:) tunr the
engine over...any direction is fine.

Now, with your valve cover off, stick your hand over the rockers for teh
cylinder you wish to find TDC for...when niether of them move, that is
the TDC area....(TDC on the cam is a fairly large area, relativly..)

If you keep feeling while the engine is being turned, you will feel what
is NOT TDC for that cylinder...in case your not sure..:)

Now that youce found TDC for that cylinder, have you helper stop!!:)

Look at the pully, and show your helper what notch (the one closest to
your crankcase line/pointer..) to line up with teh seam or pointer...

go back and keep feeling those rockers while he does this, just to be
sure that its the right notch...:)

done? ok! have him wiggle the engien back and forth 10 or so degrees so
you can be absolutly sure that you have the right one...3 sets of rockers
will be having at least one rocker move, while one set wont move at all...

got it? good!

i have done this numerous times....always found it easier than the
screwdriver in the sparkplug hole method...:)

now you can go and line that dizzy up right, if your PO (or you..:) put
your dizzy drive shaft in the wrong way, or what not...or adjust your
valves, etc etc...

of course, if you dont have the heads or rockers on at the moemnt, this
does you no good....:)

questions? ask!:)
