Thanks, Keith, but what is puzzling is that the Sqbk had been sitting over-night cold when I turned the key...and the smoke began within a very few seconds. And the car had been running strong the evening before with no indications of any power loss, unwanted noises, etc., etc. I'm still befuddled and bemuddled. It seems that the only place from which the smoke could have come is the heater boxes...but the engine was stone cold. The smoke didn't seem to be driven by a force of moving air, but just wafted lazily upward from the vent. Toby asked about the smell. To tell the truth, I was too startled to be aware of the nature of the odor. All that was going thru my mind was the thought that an all-obliterating incineration (of the VW and me) was imminent...and the lyrics to the old song, "There ain't no cold beer in Hell" somehow ran thru my thoughts... If there is a moral to this story, it is: ALWAYS KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN YOUR VW. ALWAYS. ALWAYS! I had my extinguisher in hand within five seconds...and it sure felt good! Thanks for the help so far. Any other ideas? It will be Saturday before I can do anything to or for the car, but your ideas will be very comforting to me. Phil dillard@suu.edu Anyway
