In my experience the auto tranny's don't die that suddenly. Normally they are preceded with loose of reverse and third gears. I would first suspect fluid, as when this is not full they will not engage. You must check the fluid with the car in neutral after it's been driven for awhile (I understand that is difficult in your case, but...) I have seen tranny fluid levels appear just fine cold but not even register on dipstick after the car has been driven around the block, slipping the whole way...
