I seem to remember an article about a Type III pre-runner type Baja Square or Fastback in, I think it was, Volkswagen Classics magazine around 1983 or 84. That was the only years I saw that mag around these parts, and I was driving a Beetle. Anyway, it had some sort of a cast aluminum spacer between the pan and body (they had to drop the steering column about 3 inches and raise the seats too, to make it work), arched wheel wells, I seem to remember a Type II tranny, as well as engine mods, and some kind of heavy duty breathing setup. I lost all those magazines, as well as 10 years of Hot VW's in the hurricane in '92 so I don't have any specifics, but it does seem to stick out in my memory. I have seen a Type I w/ a hardwood lift kit that was pretty well thought out, however. If someone was able to get access to the right tools.... David "Mcgiver" Walters '73 Notch
