Type III Listserver recipients,
As many of you may already know, I have been a long time proponent of taking
the Type III listserver to Usenet and establishing a Newsgroup dedicated
exclusively to type IIIs. I would like to do this because I feel it is a
much better medium than email for this kind of information exchange. I
understand, and agree with, the fact that the signal to noise ratio on
Usenet often leaves a lot to be desired, but one (wo)man's signal is
another's noise, and this problem will also affect Greg's list server.
The real question here is which means of communicating will allow us to
include the largest number of interested type III people. It is
unfortunately true that either way will leave some people out.
Reading and using Usenet Newsgroups is a process that many of you may not
have any experience with. Although it can be done with Netscape, different
software is available that makes the task even easier, and this software is
free.
I would like to pursue the creation of a new newsgroup. I forsee that it
would be named rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled.type3, following on the heels
of the already very active rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled Newsgroup. If you
already have access to Newsgroups I encourage you to participate in the
existing ...aircooled Newsgroup to become familiar with the process. If you
would like software, I recommend the following 2:
WinVN is freeware available by ftp. The latest version of WinVN is always
available from ftp.ksc.nasa.gov, in the directory [.pub.win3.winvn]. I
think Netscape can do ftp. Most of the Internet packages include an ftp
client program also.
Free Agent is a free program that is given away by Agent to promote their
commercial version. You can find it at http://www.forteinc.com/forte/agent.
I use and prefer Free Agent because it allows me to download and read
newsgroups offline (after hanging up the phone/modem.) This helps to keep
the peace at our house.
With an eye to making this move to Usenet, I would like each of you to read
and fill out the questionaire below. Please do not include this whole
letter in your reply; delete everything except the part between the asterisks.
Part of what I want to learn from this survey is how many of you actually
have access to Usenet. If you have never done anything on Usenet then this
will probably require you to make 1 phone call to your Internet Service
Provider. Please make that call BEFORE you send me your reply, so that your
reply can be as meaningful as possible. Note that if Netscape, or any other
web brouser, does anything for you, then you probably do have Usenet access.
Do NOT send your reply to the type 3 listserver; send it directly to me at

Please understand that if the survey response is good, and I manage to start
up a type 3 Newsgroup then I will do everything I can to help people get
hooked up to it successfully. Greg has also agreed to do whatever he can to
help. It is possible that he could echo the Newsgroup postings to a limited
list of people who only have email access, but neither of us knows how to do
that at this point. Anyone else who has any knowledge of how these things
work would also be VERY welcome to help/advise/whatever.
Thanks for your time,
Jim
