Non-Vee Dub people I talk to laugh or roll their eyes at me as well. They
will ask me, "Why do you bother keeping that alive? Why don't you sell it?
You've put enough money in it to buy a fat Neon or tricked Honda (Ed.
note: true!). Why??" What do I tell 'em? "Hey, if you have to ask, I
can't explain it to you."
It is a passion. To the crude, unthinking questioner it can be best
explained as a hobby. That's the closest someone will come to
understanding us. But we know the feeling more as a passionate, fiery love
that doesn't lose it's glow over time but actually grows hotter, brighter,
deeper. It's true love; it's what romance novels are based upon. How can
someone explain this to another? Maybe, if the other has a hobby that they
are equally involved in, or a person they are devoted heart and soul to,
then they have the capability to understand us. But I have found that
these type of people are less likely to ask us those defendable, hurtful
questions as they can comprehend how the passion coolly, unexpectedly
washes over the spirit and soaks a fiery desire in it.
Passion cannot be forced or faked. It can only erupt as a true state of
being. However, luckily, it can be addictive. I have witnessed
non-believers (i.e. past girlfriends) transform from a scrunched
that's-an-ugly-little-orange-car faced demon to a traffic-stopping
you-wouldn't-guess-how-many-type-threes-I-saw-today angel. My heart still
flutters a moment when ever a woman says, "Hey, that's a nice Type Three."
I know, I know, there will be those who will not understand, who will not
be willing to share or allow the passion and sacrifices will be made
(hopefully just temporarily). We do what we must to keep the knife from
cutting us and that sometimes means losing our passion (and quite possibly
more...). Grit your teeth and bare it for the time because passion cannot
be killed. It will still be there, unconditionally waiting for you, when
you are ready to take it back into your arms.
And it will feel just the same as before, only stronger.

I'm in the same boat...Eric rolls his eyes at the mere mention of the word
Volkswagen. It's a major rift, and I don't know if we're gonna make it. :)
