I don't mean to be pedantic about it, but I don't think so.  The open bottom 
door handles started in mid-72 and continued through 73.  Of course I can't 
be sure what you folks have down under, but I think they still had to be 
made in W. Germany.  And the VW folks are under the impression that they 
didn't make any of these after 8/73.

Of course if you can come up with one of those VIN tags from a type III (not 
a Dasher/Passat) where the third digit is a 4 they I would say you might 
have a point, but 'til then I plan to stick to my guns.

BTW, the last West Coast Metric catalog I looked at also thought there were 
'74 type IIIs, but they're mistaken too.

OTOH, the last year for type IVs WAS '74.
