Duh, it finally hit me...(thanks Keith!)
The stuff I talked about on the dual carbs is all based upon what I've read
and my own experience. As for finding/fitting carbs for a TYPE FOUR engine
case (not one based upon a TYPE ONE like I was thinking) you probably will
have a more difficult time finding stuff to work with it. And Keith is
right about the extra weight. Take that big ol' engine and make it work!
Make it a 2L or more as the extra power will easily offset the added
weight. They made 'em as 2.0L with hydraulics and FI, ya know ;)
I've seen a T4 engine inside a T4 wagon and it was quite the snug fit -- to
put a T4 engine in a T3 engine bay would be tight and difficult to work on
(to say the least about the actual installation). I recommend just bumping
up the T3 engine like I did.
Is this a custom project, a T4 engine into a T3 engine bay? If so, and you
have the time/money, then proceed by all means! It's an experience that
can be shared with all of us and it makes you a valuable information
resource.

The stock T4 1.7L is only 65HP so for all that work your not gaining any power
but probably a little extra weight. You'll have to soup the T4 and thats
VERY expensive compared to the T1 based engine so a T4 is a bad choice unless
you have lots 'o' money to throw at it.
