I believe that the "support" on the rear of the engine on swing-axle threes is often referred to as a "torque mount" or "anti-torque mount" or something of the sort. Ever look at a Beetle engine when somebody hits the starter? It rotates appreciably about the crankshaft axis. And why not? Small rotations are only constrained by the rubber tranny mounts at the big tranny support fork. The rear mount on early T3 clearly serves to reduce this twisting action. -Greg '71 squareback '63 Beetle
