You can try adjusting your shifter, though I would say that after 26 years you are in need of a new tranny. It probably wouldn't hurt to check the shifter linkage and connections, inspecting for slop and worn parts. I let my mechanic inspect it out so I can't tell you how to do it. Adjusting the shifter is easy but I have found it is more of a feeling than an exact measurement when it comes to setting it. A competent VW mechanic (air cooled mechanic) should be able to adjust it for you within 15 minutes (does that sound about right guys?). It's so easy that, before I knew how to do it, my previous mechanic would do it on the spot and send me on my way at no charge. If it seems perfect no matter what, start thinking about refurbishing that *old* tranny. My ' 70 Squareback has been my project now for about 2 1/2 years with another year to go. I have only diven it about 5 times and have been noticing that when I take off from a stop in first gear sometimes my shifter will pop out of first. I'm not letting out the clutch too fast or not engaging the gear far enough it just pops out when I start to move. It seems to only happen about 40 % of the time, but if I hold it in place in first gear that usually keeps it in gear. It only happens in first gear also. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks for the input!
