So, the engine works fine but the transaxle is shot, correct? A transaxle is cheap compared to an engine so if worse comes to worse you can just replace it in a day. How's the rear brakes? They could be frozen in a semi-locked position if the E-brake had been set for the duration, thus binding on forward motion but allowing rearward motion AND causing the squealing noise. Remove the hubs and wire brush everything to get the rust off. You may need new brake shoes, *possibly* hubs (depends upon the rust). Good luck taking it apart... Cover all your options before jumping into replacement, otherwise you may replace a perfectly good part. '72, huh, is it FI? Make sure you have a new fuel filter installed and fresh gas (remove the old stuff). I was just recently put on this list. I was hoping to find an answer to my problem. I have a '72 Squareback that was meant to be my first car. But things went by, and to make a long story short, I ended up with a '74 Superbeetle and left the Squareback to basically die. But I suddenly felt like fixing it. It was driving when I got it, but after two years of sitting around, it doesn't work anymore. The main problem is the tranny. It doesn't work in any forward gear, and reverse gives me a squealing sound. Am I resolved to replacing the whole thing, or is there a better solution. Thanks. Henry, '72 Squareback '74 Super Beetle
