I think the main advantage to IRS is the tremendous difference it makes in the ease of removal of the transmission. There is probably some difference in handling, but let's get serious, we didn't buy these cars because we wanted a sports car. FI started in '68 (in the US) and IRS started in 69. FWIW, I've always had a soft spot for the 69s because they had the best of all worlds: FI, IRS, 12 V, old body style.
