Speedometer,clock removal

Hi all,

Now I have the time to hang around with my car. I need some tips to remove the 
speedometer from the dash. I know there are two spring plates that hold/lock the speedo 
to its position on the dash, but I have difficulties to reach these springs. I need to 
have an octopuss' hand to reach the plate. There are many wires behind the dash, and I 
am afraid I would break them if I force my hand behind the dash. Anyone have the 
experience or tips on this?
