But the early 12 V units sweeep from the same side as the 6 V units.  I 
wouldn't suggest trying to replace just the armature.  Instead, swap the 
whole wiper linkage motor/assembly.

Did these actually pass all the current of the wiper motor, or did they just 
pass the field current?  I'm not surprised that you have had to repair lots 
of them.  In any event, they were probably called upon to dissipate less 
than half as much power as what will be needed in a 12 V conversion.  Part 
of the problem is that the 6 V unit must draw twice as much current as the 
12 V counterpart just to produce the same output power (P=V x I).

I still recommend getting a complete 12 V unit from a donor car.
