It's a fair amount of work to adjust the VM to spec, but the Bentley 
manual covers it pretty well. You need a small pressure gauge and a 
3.5 mm (I think) Allen wrench.

It's reasonable to try to attack this by just systematically 
adjusting the VM in the correct direction. I believe you turn the 
adjusting screw CW to move the shift point upwards. I'd start by 
adjusting it one full turn and then by half turns once you know 
you're moving in the right direction.

Keep track of what you've done, so you can backtrack if necessary. 
I'm pretty sure I've never had to adjust more than 5 turns, probably 
usually less than 3 turns. In the end, 1/16 of a turn will be 
significant.

It won't take you many iterations of adjusting and test driving 
before you will wish you had just studied the manual and used the 
pressure gauge. If you do, note that the adjustment pressures are 
different for '72-3.
