If you remove the dist cap while your wife cranks the engine, can you see the points open and close and can you see a little spark in the gap there?
I could see the points moving open and close with the engine being cranked manually, and when I opened the points with my finger there was an arc across the points gap. Haven't tested it on crank, however.
Or, if you have a dwell meter, use it and see what it says.
I've got to find it- It's somewhere in the garage. :)
Is the rotor actually going round and round? In other words, is it possible that the distributor just isn't seated deep enough in the case to engage completely with the drive gear?
I can see the distributor rotor move when I move turn the engine by hand, so that isn't it.
I did have a eureka moment earlier when I noticed I hadn't put the rotor back on the distributor, but was disappointed when the car still didn't start. That wasn't it.
This car always started hard since I've owned it.
