You can look under the engine and see if the thermostat is compressed (flaps
closed) or sprung (flaps open).  It should open in several minutes of idling
or less of actual driving, You can carefully heat it with a torch and it
will open that way too, but don't do it on the engine and set the oil on
fire.

You can also paint a mark on the shaft that runs between banks.

Just make sure the return spring is on there so if the thermostat fails it
will get pulled open by the spring, The Bentley shows quite well exactly how
all this should be set up.

Hi

Thanks for the friendly advice.  I can't see how the flaps themselves  
direct flow - they seem to be a doorway only. If it does not make  
sense to remove the flaps how do you folks test to make sure that  
they open and that they open at the correct time? Shall I boil the  
little springy thing that sits under the case? At what temperature is  
it supposed to open?
