I'm not really sure, as both engines had been run some time before I got
them. In the first failure, the engine came with the car (and had never been
opened up... i.e. OE VW), and had over 100,000 miles on it. The other had been
"rebuilt" before I got, but with unknown mileage and parts. Both of these motors
had regular oil changes @ 2000 mile intervals, along with a valve adjustment /
check at the same time. I used to have a "tune up" day, where I did the
regular maintenance stuff. It was about once a month, as at the time I was driving
50 miles each way to work (mostly all freeway). I didn't see any valve stem
changes, and the lash stayed pretty consistent, with most minute changes being
more due to extreme temp changes (in the winter months).
