Fess, it sounds kind of like an intermittent electrical contact problem.
Next time you get it going, start wiggling wires, looking for something that
makes the car sputter or stall.  Wiggle everything, including the big bundle
of wires going to the ECU, fuel pump relay, grounds, trigger connectors,
etc..

I think it was Keith who suggested bad/dirty trigger points.  You can test
this easily using an ohmmeter.  Unplug the trigger points from the
distributor base.  Put one probe on the middle pin (this one is the common),
and put the other probe on one of the end pins.  Have somebody crank the
starter.  You should see the needle (or numbers if digital) swing back and
forth from open to closed.  Same thing with the other outer pin.
