My daily driver is a '71 Fastback Automatic. It has been in my family
since 1979. The transmission has never given us a problem. I Tore the
trans down at about 100K miles just to make sure as my sister was going
to be driving the car and she was crippled. There was nothing wrong with
the trans, and I installed new seals and put it back together. That was
in about 1980. Here it is 26 years later, and that automatic trans is
still going strong.
As for shops that can be recommended to rebuild them,
Mitchell Transmission
1440 Locust St.
Des Moines, Iowa

They are in the yellow pages, and have been in business since the 50's.
It is a family owned business that has been passed down from
grandfather, to sons, to grandsons.
They are the ones that helped me learn about automatic tranmissions.
