Didn't you mean '66? In '72 the switches were given the added function of the wiper/washer switching. And got an extra stalk on the right of the column. I think this happened with the redesigned impact absorbing steering wheel. The new stalks were longer and closer to the wheel/driver to keep them within easy reach of the wheel. And as Jim said above the electrical connections were redesigned as well to make it easier to install/remove, around the same time maybe '71?.
