Here is what you do. Start with finding a good DVOM. This can be found at your local Radio Shack (hopefully you have one locally). Some can be straight garbage from the day you purchase it so find something that is reputable and is warrantiable.
-The ground strap SHOULD be tested with the battery connected (Set the meter in dc/amps) no more than .5 amps on our rustin vw.
- Check system voltage from body (not post) to fuse box.
13-13.5 = good. Try the key and then test voltage at fuse box. Voltage is supplied to the light switch and the distributed to the rest of the car, hence the fuse box. If voltage is low at the box, you possibly have a ignition problem. So try wiggling the key a little and see if power regains. I have had 3 cars do the same thing. check the fat red/black wire going to ignition and see what power looks like there and check the fattest red wire which should be the power in to the ignition. Meanwhile I will look to
see if I can find my schematics to help you further. My mother had this problem 3 months ago. The worst problem I ran into was when I pulled the blinker switch, It was so brittle that plastic and ball bearings went everywhere (#@$%&), so be careful. Any questions, e-mail.
