Hi All... I've been working on a 70 FI and the tank was so rusty and varnished that it was restricting fuel flow. So I decided to restore it with the POR15 tank sealant. I've done it with an oval-era tank and it was a breeze. That tank I redid is absolutely excellent. So, I said to myself, it should be that easy again since there can't be that much difference in the T3 fuel tank. Right? evidently... not so. I removed the gas tank to clean and prep, no problem, but what I hadn't noticed in the FI years was not included in the carburetor years. A metal cup surrounding the supply and return ports in the bottom of the tank, just below the sender. Doing a little investigation I found these in the archives: http://listarchive.type3.org/archives/1999/december/msg00497.html http://listarchive.type3.org/archives/1999/december/msg00505.html http://listarchive.type3.org/archives/1999/december/msg00526.html So the cup is there only for the FI models evidently. Here's my question: Is fuel supposed to be able to go UNDER that cup? At this time, I can get my tank to hold water after the cup goes dry. which will obviously be bad later on, making my tank retain about a half-tank reserve! Can anyone confirm that fuel is or is not supposed to travel under the cup to empty the tank? If it is supposed to flow underneath, I'll re-treat the tank for rust (I have not sealed it yet) and hope that cures it. If that doesn't work... how much damage could I do by **carefully** drilling some vent holes in the cup to allow for flow?
