Re: [T3] Ethanol for sale localy
<x-flowed>I think gasoline was developed as a cleaner. Like Varsol, not a fuel.
I don't remember what early cars were supposed to use. The diesel
engine's first fuel was coal gas. The fuel didn't work
The different types of fuel commonly used for car combustion engines are
gasoline (or petrol), diesel, and kerosene.
When used with a petro based fuel it ran. It may have been Kerosene

was also produced from coal. Coal was heated in a retort and among the
condensates was kerosene. Called "coal oil" back then.
The oil industry started long before the invention of the automobile. To
a certain degree, we might say the oil industry allowed the auto to be
invented Ð not the other way around.
The Petroleum Industry in the United States began in 1859 when E.L.
Drake drilled a successful oil well at Oil Creek, Pennsylvania. Later,
it became known as Titusvillle. Oil was "refined"

back in those days in little more than a closed metal tank with some
collecting trays in it and a fire underneath. Pipes leading away from
those shelves collected the distilled product in smaller tanks to the
side. The product of importance was Ð Kerosene! (Gasoline

produced as a by-product. Good fuel for those early experiments with
internal combustion engines though!) All this sounds just a little
dangerous. It was -
and still is.

Per gallon, there's less energy content in ethanol, but maybe you can
pump more of it into the combustion chamber than you can get away
with using gasoline. Gasoline used to be used at Indy, but it was
outlawed because of the fire hazard. ISTR that it was brought back
for a very few years in the '60s but was then outlawed after another
big crash.
It's often been said that if someone tried to introduce gasoline as a
new product on the marketplace today, it would never get approval for
sale to the public. It's just too dangerous.
