I'll bet you're right. There should be a grounding strap that runs from the 
lower right side of the tranny nose to the body. If that is gone, disconnected, 
or broken, then the starter current is forced to find its way home by alternate 
paths.

Also, the brain for the FI gets its ground at the top center of the engine 
case, so if the engine isn't grounded then the brain won't be working right, 
either. So this probably explains at least part of your fuel problems.
