Have you looked to see if the rod is there? It is easily seen without
disassembling anything. If the rod is gone you know that the flaps can't be
there. If it's there, you can't be sure.

I just double checked and the rod is gone. While this can't be the cause of my rapid overheating, should I plug the open rod holes with small rubber stoppers? I assume even a small amount of engine air could raise the overall temp (?).

On a related note (cool air), the mod done by the builder to the fan shroud for the full flow left two gaps through which hot air (heated further by the full flow hose/fittings themselves) could pass. The builder says he is confident the gap is too small to be related to my overheating, but I'm wondering if listees share this confidence (?). He shows this technique/placement in his Samba advertisement (the photo in the center below):

Below are links to photos of the my shroud with the same mods made (note the gaps):

Any idea how much these would compromise the cool air system? The next question would be, how best to plug the gaps? I was thinking one could slice a larger diameter hose (3-4 inches in length) down the side, slide it over the full-flow hose/fitting and into the gap, and then fasten it down with a hose clamp. This way it couldn't possibly get sucked up into the fan. It wouldn't be airtight but it would diminish the size of those gaps at least 70-80%. Thoughts?

Also look at the Bentley manual ch. 3, fig. 11-1, item 8. You should have a
part like this on each side. They are often forgotten and not so obvious if
missing, but they are critical.

Both of the deflector plates are installed. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Best regards,

Dave Y.
