This may just be another case where the real answer is the simple silly one,
not the complicated subtle one.

I wish that were the case! I called the builder and he is positive the entire thermostatic system (incl. flaps) has been removed, so there is no way the air flow could be blocked at that spot.


Regarding Dave's point about the air intake boot, it is brand new and installed properly, so this could not be the issue, As well, there is no rust at the rear of the engine compartment/bellows and in the air channel leading into the bellows, so it's not possible that hot air is getting sucked into the system over the exhaust.

Also, to Phil's question about the heads/compression/valves etc. I found out the following from the builder:

Dual port heads
7.5 CR
35.5 intake
32.5 exhaust
(Exhaust system is an ISP West "tuck away")
