That would not have been a new engine. VW never shipped the dealers NEW
engines, even for warranty replacement. For warranty work, we actually
rebuilt the old one, no matter what was needed. They wouldn't put in a
rebuilt engine in a new car.
That engine has never been in a car. I can tell by some of the things I
see in the crate. The tape over the generator holes, etc.
Towards the later part of the '70's we couldn't even get the complete
engines, only long blocks, valve cover to valve cover.
