I was guessing a factory remanufacture, not factory-new- the crate has a
recycling-type symbol on it (pic on the bottom, with the VW logo painted
on the crate).  Unless that logo is meant to imply that the old engine
is to be returned to VW in that box.

The real test would be to find out if that engine was ever installed in
a car (if it was a rebuild)- one could look up the engine serial number
and see which VIN it's associated with, if applicable.
