The corner problem tends to average itself out, unless you're just
driving around in circles, or ovals.

For cars running Time/Speed/Distance rallys the hi-performance setup
was to add a speedo cable to one of the front wheels, if the car was
rear wheel drive. This was done because any corner error tended to
average itself out while errors from wheelslip were always larger on
the drive wheels. Rear engined Porsches and VWs were thought to have
an advantage here because of the way they came from the factory.

The extra speedo cable was generally added to the OUTSIDE of the
wheel. It looped out from the body and came in and attached to the
hubcap. I believe it was Heuer that made a kit for this, as well as
the early computer that attached to it.

A friend and I did some TSD rallying in his 64 Beetle in around '69
and never did very well, except for the one time we won with an
accumulated error over the ~2 hour course of just one second. That
was a complete fluke, but I still have the navigator's trophy. ;-)

We couldn't afford the expensive Heuer equipment. All I had was a
slide rule and a watch with a sweep second hand. It's a very pleasant
memory.
