I don't recall the parts prices over here back then, but everything from VW dealers tended to be a lot more expensive than the aftermarket specialists charged (and still are). I think prices in the USA were probably much more competitive. A UK VW dealer 3000 mile inspection service on my Beetle in the '60s was £3 ($7.20); it's probably 40 times that now, so that would make the VW muffler around $900 today. I'm not sure what that proves though! Fuel has gone up by about 30 times or so I'd guess since then over here. Dave.
