Originally marketed in Europe as the Variant. The name got changed only for the 
North American market when it started getting imported here in '66. 

There are various reasons suggested as to why the name change. Some believe 
that it was to avoid confusion with the Valiant. I suspect that VWoA just 
didn't want to try to sell the American public on something that sounded 
"different" or non-conformist, which Variant certainly does.
