I've often wondered if I could do something like this. It still looks like it 
would be a major job, however.

I think of it as a kind of "crossover pipe", but I expected it to be perforated 
in the center section. Russ, didn't the outlet come out of the center section? 
If so, how does the exhaust get there?

Is there a 4th pipe hidden in the background?

I'd guess no, but even if there was some when new, it would all be gone rather 
quickly.
