Re: [T3] T3 front end rebuild/ stinky car.

<x-flowed>EthanS=> anyone know of a book or something explaining how to do a
=> rebuild on the front-end of a type 3?

Get the Bentley manual.

=> What all is generally replaced ... My car feels "loose" and kinda
=> "wobbly".

First you'll want to study up on the frontend, understand how it works, and see if you can't adjust it to spec. The Type 3 front end is much more robust than the Type 1 that most VW folks are used to, but it's also more subtle to adjust. And like most every other mechanical part, old OEM German parts are generally better than new aftermarket parts. If you're not into doing it yourself, take it to an experienced alignment shop -- and take the manual with you, they'll probably need it.

The part most likely to need replacing is the steering damper. Next come steering joints, etc. But first check them out thoroughly. You may just need to adjust your steering box.

=> I have an exhaust smell all the time.

It's not uncommon for squarebacks to draw exhaust through bad hatch seals. Also check your engine cover seal.

=> Could my heater boxes just be shot?

It's possible, but not likely.
