Thats better than the 4 months I got out of my DOT 5 switches.

Well... the problem that arises is that when you open the circuit there is
an inductive "kick" or discharge of stored energy in the overall inductance.
This is caused when the collapsing magnetic field induces a current which
can build up quite a voltage that then Arc's over the contacts that have
just opened... burning them.  Putting a capacitor across these contacts will
absorb that sudden voltage spike (essentially shorting it out) and
protecting the contacts.
