Sounds like somebody switched to DOT 5 ! :-) You basically did a better job at what I did... I used a microwave oven switch which is smaller and needed to put some Caps across the contacts to keep them from burning. Sticking a .01 or .1 uF cap across your contacts too would help give you that warm and fuzzy that it will hold out long term.
