The click you heard could be the voltage regulator.  It doesn't usually cause
stalling on such a scale, but certainly can cause misfiring, so might be
aggravating another problem.  If the volts are down, the mixture would get even
richer.
Check the voltage on the battery goes up to around 14 Volts or so when running
at medium rpm (hope you can get it to do that).

The history and 22mpg is another indication of this problem.
