Possibly, but at issue is the fact that to get the end cap off the
motor, you need to saw off the top. The top of the can is compressed
very tightly on top of the cap. It isn't a series of crimps, it's one
long continuous crimp. It would be like uncrimping the top of a beer
can, and then crimping it back together.

Not especially feasable. The inlet is about a 3/4" x 1/4" tube, and the
inlet screen fits onto here by compression.

This fuel pump is one of those in-tank pumps that is meant to be thrown
away when it breaks. I wish it were repairable, but all you can really
do with these is perform an autopsy when it dies. Of course, VW charges
$300 at the dealership for it, and I frankly don't have the time to do
the research to find a suitable substitute. I would need the big Bosch
(or VDO, which is the OEM for this pump) book of fuel pumps to find one
that matches specs and orifices.
