Do you mean that there is a screen at the inlet and a filter at the outlet? All of this is just speculation on my part, but grit doesn't even have to be visible to be important. The kind of dust that blows around on a dry windy day may be enough to do the damage you see. Plus, the copper in the commutator is very soft, so a bit of grit that finds its way in there can get imbedded in the copper and chew away at the brushes forever. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
