[T3] ignition timing

<x-charset UTF-8>sorry to send so many questions at once, but sunday is my only day off
(by personal choice) from studying for med school so i gotta get it
all in at once.

this summer when i was driving my car more, i noticed a sound like
rattling bottles in the back when accelerating on a hill or with more
gas than normal - typical pinging/knocking, right? so i checked the
timing and it was way advanced from any tick marks (like 2 or 3 big
screwdriver notches away) by a local guy who did some work for me
(anyone remember my incident with the door ding at the shop?)

i took out my light and changed it to the middle timing mark that i
had painted white a few years ago. the rattling bottles went away
(along with some power and pep). head and oil temps may have dropped,
but i can't be sure.

the engine is a 1776 with big valve heads (040?) and stock carbs and
mild cam. i know it sounds dumb, but i wanted the option of bigger
carbs later and it works great. ignition is the oh-so-crappy 009.
the wife won't let me drop the cash on an aircooled.net ACN SVDA. is
this dizzy the solution to my problems?

your help is much, much appreciated. now, back to studying a
different kind of complex system - circulation, inflammation and
hemodynamics!
