The only real solution to this problem is to open up the door sometime when it 
is dry and thoroughly clean out all the accumulated crud from the bottom. It's 
normal for water to get in there. The scrapers don't really stop it; they just 
slow it down a bit. The real problem is the accumulation of crud (that's the 
technical term) that eventually clogs up the drains.

And, YES, Peter's doing exactly the right thing by taking care of the plastic 
sheets in there. They're important, because they keep the water from getting to 
the hardboard backing of the interior panels. They can be pulled off and 
replaced many times if you are careful. I use rubber cement to reattach them if 
the original adhesive has lost its tackiness.
