You are one lucky so and so. That that didn't drop into the ring and pinion area. Originally, it is just crimped into the end of the shaft by those 4 flats. They do it that way to have a mini universal joint. And over time it loosens up. I would lay it on a block of wood, and punch each flat place with a center punch. that should tighten it enough to get it back in.
