> >You should also have a distributor with vacuum advance but no vacuum retard. > > Right. And the vacuum holds on my tongue when I do that disgusting test. ;-) And the actuating arm on that vac can should have 505 stamped in it. I'm actually running a 311 905 205L (68?) distributor. But it's solid and works well in this application. I have the same unit in my other car (see below). >The only systems that are compatable with the 5-pin TVS are the 72 and 73. Those years use the early and late brains respectively and the E PS. Of those, I recommend the 73. The D brain is from late 70.5 & 71. OK that may have been my problem. Something I didn't mention (because I didn't want to complicate things unnecessarily) is I have another 1973 FI MT Square. She's been my daily driver for about the last ten years and has been the best car I've ever had; but I digress. I used her as a temporary donor because she has a matching set of "E" components. First I swapped her brain into the problem child. Idle improved, but still had the problem off the line. Next I swapped out the PS. This actually made things worse all around. Go figure. I double checked the timing (7.5 deg BTDC) statically. All was well. Finally, because I wanted to try anything (and because I had it), I figured I might as well swap out the TVS. Viola! I let her warm up so I could set the idle (she seems to likes it at around 900rpm) and took her for a spin. She doesn't have the power that my driver has, but she no longer bogs down pulling away from a stop. I'm letting her cool down for a while so I can see how she reacts cold. Hopefully she'll react like she's supposed to. If I may, I'd like to go a little off topic to say thanks to everyone on this list. Reading through the archives for weeks and weeks, helped me figure out a few other things with this car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
