Thanks for asking! ;-) Apparently cows will eat whatever they find in their feed, so they occasionally get bits of wire fencing, nuts & bolts, etc in themselves, and these cause problems. If you occasionally feed them a magnet, this will pass thru the gut and carry all the iron bits out the other end. A typical cow magnet is about 1/2" dia and 2-3" long with completely hemispherical ends. Because they are magnetic, they are also easy to recover from the manure and "recycle." I think they are readily available at most farm stores. One of the reasons I thought they would be good for this application is that you could probably push a small one in the drain hole without removing the pan. Berg recommends attaching one to the side of the oil pickup tube in the engine, but I think it would be even better to just stick a few small button magnets on top of the sump plate. I should try that just to see what shows up. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
