The Passat is much larger than the Type 3 - though I suppose I've put on a bit
of weight too, in the meantime.  ;-(

I'd say the Jetta Wagon is very much a replacement size for size for the Type 3
Squareback, though it's much faster, has better road-holding and a safer
passenger cell.  As I remarked before the VW Polo (Audi 50) was the Beetle
replacement in terms of performance and space, IMHO.

I think platform numbers are something of a red-herring really, as far as the
turmoil that existed as VW got modern with water-cooled vehicles.  The Passat
was more the size of the Type 4, then where did the K70 fit in as Type 48?
