The "scrubber" was discontinued in 70 or 71, and most of the older engines had it removed and thrown away. I think they are a good idea unless you drive in sub-freezing weather, but they are clearly not necessary. If you put something in there to replace it, make sure it's clean, compatable with hot oil, and can't shed anything into the sump. The late engines just got that stubby "tube", the big washer, and a coil spring to keep the washer quiet. The coil spring replaced the "scrubber." - Jim Adney Madison, WI USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
