Assuming that your 71 is fuel injected, the car ignition must be on in order to pressurize your fuel rail and locate the leak. It also sounds like your mechanic is making you pay for his ignorance. Fuel pumps are fairly expensive and almost never the source ot leakage. Sounds more like an old fuel hose with a hairline crack.
